Hidden strength beneath the roof

Roofing underlayment plays a critical role in helping homes stand up to stronger storms, water intrusion and long-term wear. 

As storms become stronger, more frequent and less predictable across North America, roofing systems are being asked to do more than ever. For contractors and homeowners working with Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), that means looking beyond shingles, metal panels or tiles and considering the full roof system protecting the structure below. 

That protection starts before shingles, metal panels or tiles are installed. Roofing underlayment, often hidden from view, serves as a secondary water barrier that helps protect the roof deck when the outer roofing layer is damaged, delayed or pushed past its limits by severe weather. When wind-driven rain, ice dams or storm damage create vulnerabilities, underlayment can help prevent water from entering the home. 

Underlayment is not a one-size-fits-all product. The right underlayment can make all the difference. High tear strength is important for resisting wind uplift and flying debris during storms. Waterproof or highly water-resistant materials help keep moisture from penetrating the roof deck, while slip-resistant top surfaces can improve installer safety and support a more efficient installation process. Ultraviolet resistance also matters when a roof is temporarily exposed after storm damage or during construction delays. 

Storm preparation should include a full look at the roofing system, not just the shingles. Aging or worn materials may need to be replaced with higher-performance options and installation details such as full deck coverage, proper fastener spacing and correct overlap techniques are essential for durability. In high-wind zones, specified cap nails or cap staples can also make a meaningful difference in roof performance. 

As insurance costs rise and building codes become more demanding, roof resilience begins with choices made below the surface. Building for the future means selecting materials designed to protect the roof system through severe weather and over time.
