You might not think a new roof would be an exciting birthday gift, but for June Midgette, the kindness of Habitat for Humanity and Home Genius Exteriors came at exactly the right time. After 46 years of residence in her Delmar, Maryland home, the upgrade wasn’t just nice to have, but necessary to keep a roof over her head. In an interview with WRDE Coast TV, June explained “I needed a roof badly and I just could not afford the roof and somehow my daughter put me in touch with Habitat for Humanity.”
Partnering with Home Genius Exteriors, this project was possible through the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project that works to provide new roofs to military families. June believes her husband must be taking care of her even now. He was a 20-year Navy Veteran who passed away in 2007. This 103-year-old home gets a brand-new roof and June gets to stay in the home she made with him thanks to this project's commitment to honor and protect veterans and their families, one roof at a time.
For Home Genius Exteriors, this project was not only a chance to give back to the community, but a learning experience as well. Hundred-year-old construction has quite a story to tell. As vice president and co-founder, Max Alessi, and his team found, “there was a cedar shake layer underneath the asphalt, so we had to take all that down, put some new decking down to make sure we had a great foundation, and then kind of rebuilt the whole system.” The new roof provides almost 2,500 square feet of protection and uses one of Owens Corning’s best platinum systems. Not only can June stay in her home, but it’ll protect future generations as well.
