This year, The Coffee Shops™ crew got to explore the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC)’s 2024 show in Phoenix, Arizona. As we head into the new year and look forward to the 2025 show, let’s take a look at everything last year’s show had to offer. In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Megan Ellsworth spoke to IIBEC’s CEO Brian Pallasch about the March 2024 event.
The last show included a few new features for IIBEC. Brian shared, “We had three general sessions [in 2024], which are sort of technical sessions that everyone can go to.” One of these sessions was taught by Marc Levitan from the National Institute of Standards and Technology about tornado design loads in the context of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 7-22 code and the 2024 International Building Code updates. In addition to these sessions, there were many additional education and training opportunities. Brian shared, “We had a full complement of classes, over 20 seminars, along with a special auxiliary seminar that was a whole class on re-roofing.”
The show also featured Nikki Greenberg as the keynote speaker. Brian added, “She has training in architecture and presented ‘The Future of Building Enclosures, Robotics, Moondust and More.’ She really focused on the next wave of technology that's going to affect all of us and how we can incorporate all that technology into what we're doing in roofing, walls, waterproofing, et cetera.” This was very relevant for the IIBEC members that Brian spoke to, as they are all very focused on the need for more hiring, more labor. Brian explained, “They appreciate any tips that folks like Nikki can bring us about leveraging these new technologies to be more efficient. I also think these new technologies are what can spur young people to enter this profession and this industry.”
Outside of all of these formal activities, the IIBEC show was a great success for community and networking. An attendee, Thomas M. Gernetzke, shared, “The IIBEC annual convention has been invaluable for my career and my business. In addition to the education sessions, I always learn something that provides immediate benefit from simply attending the convention on the trade show floor and during the social events.”
