Redefining roof protection

Redefining roof protection

By Jesse Sanchez.

This new underlayment combines energy efficiency with Class A fire resistance.

A new roofing underlayment is turning heads in the construction and building materials industries for its powerful mix of fire resistance and thermal performance. Valor Thermal by Sol-R-Skin™, a joint effort from Eagle Roofing Products and International Insulation Products, LLC, has entered the market as a high-performance solution that meets increasing fire safety and energy efficiency demands, particularly in Western U.S. regions where such standards are tightening fast.

Marketed as “the ultimate Class A fire-resistant underlayment,” Valor Thermal aims to deliver more than just compliance. It integrates the insulating benefits of high-density fiberglass with layers of scrim-reinforced aluminum and a synthetic base to create a barrier that not only defends against fire, but also reduces attic heat by up to 55°F. Its R-value reaches as high as 5.6 when installed with standard battens, putting it among the top thermal performers in its class. Its energy-efficient qualities help properties stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter, an added benefit in a climate-conscious era.

With a 1200°F melting point and compliance with ASTM E108, E84 and Florida and California fire standards, the product positions itself as a go-to choice for builders working in Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) zones. As the product flyer states, “Choose peace of mind with the premium fire-resistant qualities of Valor Thermal — protection you can trust, season after season.”

Application-wise, contractors will find the product designed for ease and compliance. The underlayment comes in manageable 4.5 ft. x 100 ft. rolls with user-friendly features like anti-slip fiberglass scrim and white anti-glare surfaces to improve rooftop visibility during installation.

Currently available only in the western half of the United States, Valor Thermal could play a pivotal role in how architects, builders and specifiers approach fire and energy code challenges going forward.

For those seeking cutting-edge performance from the roof deck up, the underlayment is worth a closer look!
