TAMKO Nears Completion of $25 Million Environmental Control Project at Dallas Manufacturing Plant

TAMKO Building Products LLC is finishing a multi-year $25 million environmental control project at its Dallas facility.

The project includes installation of additional environmental control equipment that will be fully operational by mid-2023. These state-of-the-art controls, designed and built by proven environmental emissions control and clean-air solutions providers John Zink and CECO Environmental, include updated capture and control equipment on the plant’s two production lines, as well as the replacement of its current thermal oxidizer with a larger capacity, ultra-low NOx thermal oxidizer.

Jennifer Oldvader, TAMKO’s chief environmental health and safety officer, explained that this eight-year-long project is part of TAMKO’s corporate philosophy. “We are always looking for ways to enhance our facilities, and we are excited to bring these new environmental controls online in the next few months.”

In recent years, TAMKO has made a number of operational changes at the Dallas facility. In addition to new environmental emission controls, TAMKO reduced truck traffic on local roads by staging third-party trucks picking up finished products in a nearby parking lot. TAMKO also has invested millions of dollars to pave roadways in and around the plant to minimize dust from trucks maneuvering around the facility.

Oldvader said these changes, taken together, are projected to reduce potential emissions, including a 45% reduction to both PM2.5 and Sulfur Dioxide emissions. TAMKO has been operating in Dallas for more than 30 years. It currently employs more than 100 people in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with a DFW-area annual payroll of more than $20 million and plant hourly wages averaging more than $33/hour, not to mention the significant number of outside contractors hired to perform work at the Dallas plant.

TAMKO’s Dallas plant produces enough shingles to re-roof more than 100,000 homes/year. TAMKO products are used in new construction and re-roofs, including those routinely necessitated by catastrophic events such as the 2018 Dallas hailstorm and Hurricane Ian.
