Talk to a contractor that has been in the roofing business for a while and they often speak fondly of days gone by. The old tools of the trade are disappearing. Hammers have been replaced by pneumatic nailers and hand saws by power saws.
It’s not just tools that are changing. The industry is seeing products change because of new technologies too. Products that were considered cutting edge at the time have been replaced with newer, safer options (without asbestos for instance).
While the tools have changed, the craftsmen (and women) have not. Roofing contractors still take pride in their craft and workmanship remains important. While contractors aren’t using hand tools anymore, they are using technology to build and create more efficiently.
The recent International Roofing Expo in Las Vegas showcased many new technologies that are changing the way the industry works. From synthetic underlayments to liquid sealants to numerous liquid coating systems, technology is allowing contractors to install better-performing products in a more efficient manner than ever before.
As a result, contractors are seeing their businesses grow. While this might seem like a good thing, caution is advised as growing too fast could make it harder to stay organized and on top of all of the jobs. Just as installing and understanding the tools and products is an art, so is running a business.
Gone are the days of paper, file folders, job jackets and filing cabinets. Technology has given contractors the opportunity to be mobile and digital. Customer data can be kept in a CRM system and tasks can be assigned right out of the system. Insurance work can flow into programs such as Xactimate for ease of reporting and working with adjusters.
Just as contractors have embraced the newer power tools and better engineered products, they need to put the paper behind them and move into the digital age. It’s essential for communication, scheduling, estimating and overall success.
