I love the discussion around “new” technology. Merriam-Webster defines technology as “the practical application of knowledge, especially in a particular area.”
So, advances in the way we do things is technology. Becoming more efficient has been the goal from day one. We as people have been improving the way we do things for as long as we have been doing things. The wheel, technology! The arrow, technology! The flaming arrow, advanced technology! I could go on, but I will not.
It does not matter what we do, we get up every morning and ask how can I do what I do better, cheaper, faster? That is how we excel and grow and survive.
I am always looking for new tools that will help me in my quest for better, cheaper, faster. So, when someone has applied their practical knowledge to what I do and wants me to try it I am first asking will it make what I do faster, will it give me the ability to do what I do cheaper, will allow me to do what I do better. If I can get at all three, I am all in. If I can get two of the three then I need to examine what the effect will be on my overall operation.
For example, if a new tool “technology” allows me to be faster at something and provides a better end product but cost to operate it or maintain it will put me in a position where I cannot be competitive in the market, it is not a good addition to my “toolbox.”
Or if something is affordable and adds to the quality of my end product but it slows down the process to a degree that I cannot deliver my work in the time frames that my customers are receiving from my competitors then it is not a good addition to my “toolbox.”
So, in short, I am looking for Better! Faster! Cheaper! All day every day.
