Why asphalt shingles remain the right choice for homeowners

When looking for both performance and affordability, homeowners and contractors still choose asphalt shingles. 

A recent press release written by a representative from the metal roofing industry declares the case is closed: metal roofing is the superior material, and asphalt shingles are “failing American homeowners.” 

But roofing isn’t a one-size-fits-all decision. Presenting it as such oversimplifies a far more complex reality – and puts an undue burden on families who can’t afford more expensive roofing materials.  

While both metal and asphalt roofing systems offer unique benefits, framing the conversation as a contest between a winner and a loser oversimplifies many of the factors that matter to most homeowners. Cost, performance, curb appeal and installation flexibility all play a role. For decades, asphalt has consistently delivered on all fronts. 

Despite the narrative pushed by the metal roofing industry, today’s asphalt shingles are engineered to meet high standards for wind resistance, impact protection and long-term performance. Architectural asphalt shingles, in particular, are designed to last decades when properly installed and maintained.  

Asphalt shingles withstand hail, heavy rain, high winds and other extreme weather conditions – the same threats often cited as reasons to choose metal roofing. Asphalt manufacturers continue to innovate with features like reinforced nailing zones, advanced granules that combat algae and UV damage, and technologies that help reduce heat absorption and energy costs. 

Affordability is a major factor in any roofing decision. This is another area where asphalt continues to lead. While some people may prefer metal roofs, their high up-front cost remains a barrier for many homeowners. The average cost of a metal roof is 25% higher than asphalt, which makes it thousands of dollars more expensive for the homeowner.  

It’s worth noting that approximately 80% of homes in the United States are protected by asphalt shingles today. Asphalt shingles have earned homeowner trust through decades of dependable performance, broad product availability, robust warranties and a wide network of skilled installers. These shingles come in an array of styles and colors, allowing homeowners to achieve the look they want without compromising on cost or quality. And because so many contractors are experienced with asphalt systems, installation is often faster and more reliable. 

Ultimately, this isn’t about declaring one roofing material superior to all others. It’s about protecting consumer choice and recognizing that millions of homeowners continue to choose asphalt shingles for good reason: they are affordable, aesthetically appealing and built to perform in the real world.
