Why Successful Business Owners Don’t Do Everything by Themselves

Ruby successful business owners delegate
September 14, 2022 at 9:00 a.m.

By Cass Jacoby.

It’s time to take off one of your many hats as a contractor and outsource the small stuff to the professionals.

Heidi J. Ellsworth visits with partner development manager for Ruby, Steffney Jones, in a Roofing Road Trips episode. The two have a conversation about how outsourcing certain aspects of your business can help ensure that you grow.

As any contractor will tell you, time is a precious commodity. It comes up again and again as a pain point that a contractor needs more time to actually focus on the business rather than just working in the business; that is where outsourcing comes into the picture. Outsourcing is a great way to free up your time while ensuring that you maintain the level of attention and professionalism customers expect from you.

“Running a business is a full-time job before you even pick up your tools and head out on a call out to the field,” says Steffney. “Outsourcing tasks to trusted team members, or even freelancers, can give you time back in the day to meet your customer's needs. And I think if you want to successfully run a business, you need to have that 10,000-foot view of your business. And if you're down in the trenches, you don't really get that view.”

Being able to get that 10,000-foot view of your business helps you see what areas of growth you should be prioritizing. Look at any successful business and you will see that not everyone is doing it alone, successful business owners know how and when to allocate resources.

“If you ask successful business owners what their daily lives look like, they're not going to be doing all of the work that you're putting in day in and day out, because they've learned how to allocate resources,” says Steffney. “They've learned how to delegate, and they've learned how to outsource appropriately. They have help from services like Ruby.”
