When Dale Decker, owner of Racine, Wisconsin-based D& D Roofing and General Contracting, learned of Brad Olson and Natra Tabit’s two-year-old daughter’s health issues he knew he wanted to help. “You don’t run across a situation like this very often, a (2)-year-old with cancer,” Decker told The Journal Times in an interview.
According to an article in The Journal Times, a friend of Brad and Natra’s, Angela LaRue, reached out Decker along with the charity Kisses from Keegan which provided all the materials, and to Bliffert Lumber who donated the plywood to replace the roof decking.
Brad and Natra’s daughter, Nora, became sick in October of 2016, when she was diagnosed with Leukemia. The same day as her diagnosis, she suffered a brain bleed and a stroke that required six hours of brain surgery. For the past year, she has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment and received a bone marrow transplant this summer. She also has had two eye surgeries because of her stroke.
Right before Nora became ill, the couple had planned to replace the aging roof on their home but that plan was pushed aside so the couple could focus on helping their daughter. Brad, a mechanic, has only been able to work one day a week since Nora’s bone marrow transplant this summer. The couple take turns spending days with Nora at the hospital.
Nora is making a remarkable recovery, her mother tells The Journal Times, though Nora still has a long road ahead of her. Decker said his company does about three or four charity projects per year. He told The Journal Times that he has been fortunate and he likes to carry that good fortune over to other people.
