Carlisle SynTec Systems’ wintertime tips

Carlisle SynTec Systems’ wintertime tips - customer

Make your next job easier and safer with these tips.

Wintertime single-ply roofing projects are possible, but they often require extra planning. It can be tough to stick to a timeline when you’re dealing with unpredictable weather. In addition to weather challenges, many roofing products (like adhesives, sealants and coatings) require certain temperature ranges to cure or bond properly. When using glue or primer, flash-off times will be slower. Extra steps, such as storing materials in heated enclosures or using heat blankets, may be necessary on cold-weather jobs.

While you should always follow your manufacturer’s specific instructions for the products you are installing, here are some of Carlisle SynTec Systems’ general tips for wintertime installations.

Carlisle’s cold-weather recommendations

  • Membranes – Allow membranes to relax for at least 30 minutes before installing.
  • Adhesives – Avoid puddles and globs and re-roll any wet areas to break the skin and allow solvents to flash off. Shaded roof areas take longer to flash off than sunny areas. Perform a “tack test” to ensure adhesives have properly flashed off before moving on to the next step.
  • Flashings – In cold temperatures, you can use a heat gun to warm flashings until they are warm to the touch prior to installation. This will make application much quicker and easier. It may be necessary to keep flashing products in heated storage until use.
  • Scheduling – Schedule crews during daylight hours to avoid hazards in the dark and allow recovery from extreme cold. Build extra days into your schedule to account for weather delays.
  • Worker Safety – Heated jackets, gloves and insulated boots reduce risks of frostbite and slips. Extra harnesses, guardrails and ice-melt products reduce fall risks. Warm-up shelters with heaters let crews take breaks without losing productivity entirely.

Carlisle's product recommendation

Carlisle SynTec Systems’ FleeceBACK ® RapidLock (RL™) System uses VELCRO® Brand Securable Solutions to create a fully adhered system without the use of adhesives. The RapidLock hook-and-loop attachment system is comprised of specialty FleeceBACK RL membrane (which acts as the hook) and RL Polyiso insulation with a special facer (which acts as the loop.) As soon as the insulation is installed, crews can immediately roll out the membrane without waiting for adhesives to set up or flash off. Additionally, there are no concerns about material storage on the roof.

Conclusion

With planning, specific products, heated storage and strict safety measures, winter commercial roofing is possible and often necessary. However, it can cost more, often takes longer and requires tight adherence to safety and manufacturer guidelines. Specialized products can make it easier to finish the job on time and on budget.
