As Los Angeles County moves forward with the Green Building Standards Code, known as Title 31, builders and homeowners are looking more closely at roofing products that support sustainable construction. One key requirement of the code focuses on “cool roof products,” roofing materials designed to reflect solar energy rather than absorb it. EcoStar says the regulation is part of a broader effort to reduce the environmental impact of new and ongoing construction projects in Los Angeles County. Title 31 focuses on sustainable and efficient building materials, water conservation, improved air quality and energy efficiency.
Cool roofing tiles play an important role in that effort. Unlike roofing products that absorb heat after prolonged sun exposure, cool roof tiles are designed to reflect sunlight and help reduce heat transfer into the spaces below. That can make a meaningful difference for homeowners, especially in sunny climates where keeping indoor spaces comfortable can require significant energy use.
The performance of a cool roof depends on two main factors: solar reflectance and thermal emittance. Solar reflectance measures the fraction of solar energy a roofing tile reflects, while thermal emittance refers to the tile’s ability to radiate heat away from its surface. Together, these qualities help keep roofing materials cooler and reduce the amount of heat entering the home.
EcoStar notes that cool roofing products can benefit homes with or without air conditioning. In homes without air conditioning, cool roof tiles help keep spaces more comfortable without using energy. In homes with air conditioning, they can help reduce the amount of energy needed to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
Beyond code compliance, cool roof tiles can increase comfort during hot summer months, reduce monthly energy costs, help lower carbon dioxide emissions through energy savings and reduce roof degradation caused by high temperatures.
EcoStar synthetic roofing tile is offered in a variety of colors and styles and is designed to capture the look of natural tile while providing a sustainable, lightweight roofing option.
