FAQS of waterproofing part 2: Environmental factors

In the first article of the FAQs (frequently asked questions) of waterproofing series, Pli-Dek experts shared practical answers to frequently asked waterproofing questions, helping contractors and property owners better understand leak prevention and long-term moisture protection. In this second part, we dive into how to adjust a project to environmental factors so that the final product is high-performance, safe and aesthetically pleasing.  

What causes cracks in pedestrian deck surfaces? 

Cracking can result from building movement, temperature changes, improper substrate preparation, impact or normal wear. Waterproof deck systems are designed to manage movement while maintaining a protective surface over the structure. 

Can waterproofing improve the appearance of an older deck? 

Yes. Decorative coatings and textured finishes can refresh worn or dated surfaces while adding waterproofing protection. This allows property owners to improve appearance and performance as part of the same project. 

How can contractors make an outdoor deck safer when it is wet? 

Textured and slip-resistant finishes can improve traction on balconies, walkways, stairs, pool decks and other pedestrian surfaces. The correct finish should be selected based on traffic, water exposure, cleaning requirements and accessibility needs. 

How do you protect a deck in an area with heavy rain or snow? 

Wet and cold climates require careful attention to drainage, flashing, freeze-thaw movement and moisture exposure. Waterproofing systems used in these environments should be installed with details designed for repeated rain, snow, ice and temperature changes. 

How would one protect high-traffic walkways and common areas? 

Pedestrian decks, corridors and stairways need a surface that can withstand frequent use without sacrificing waterproofing performance. The system should be selected based on expected traffic, weather exposure and maintenance demands. 

How do you protect occupied space beneath a rooftop deck? 

Rooftop decks require waterproofing that protects the rooms, garages or commercial spaces below. Special attention should be given to drainage, penetrations, walls, door thresholds and other transitions that could allow water into the building. 

How can contractors reduce maintenance on balconies and walkways? 

A durable waterproof coating helps protect the substrate from routine exposure to water, sunlight and foot traffic. Regular inspections, cleaning and timely maintenance can also prevent small problems from developing into larger repairs.
