Part of (literally) building a sustainable future is having the innovation to get there. Derrick Hutchinson and Srinivas Veeramasuneni (aka “Dr. Vas”) of USG share the company’s commitment to sustainability and its sustainability goals in a Roofing Road Trips episode.
To USG, a 120-year-old company, the principles of sustainability are not new. “At USG, even before people were talking about sustainability, we started this journey way back even maybe 50 years back,” says Dr. Vas. “We have been using recycled paper for almost 60 years. And leverage recycled materials in several products. In fact, our mantra is reuse, reduce and recycle, for everything we do has to have those three lenses.”
It’s remarkable that USG has had the principles of sustainability in mind for such a long time. Moving forward, the approach is pretty much the same: design more sustainable products.
Dr. Vas tells Heidi, “We just announced our 2030 objectives. And we are focusing on certain areas: reducing our carbon footprint, making a circular economy and supporting healthier buildings. For keeping these concepts in place, we always focused on sustainability, but now we are formalized, we have clear goals and we have a roadmap to achieve this.”
USG’s customers are focused on how sustainable the company they are working with really is. “I talk to our customers, the building owners, more and more they're asking about sustainability,” Derrick explained. “How do they contribute to the world we have today? And I'm happy that at USG, we have that solution for them. We keep driving that solution and improving on it.”
