Leadership lessons from Rocky Bleier

In a recent episode of the Contractor Outlook Newscast, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Rocky Bleier, former American professional football player, decorated Vietnam veteran and successful construction company owner, to talk about what it takes to lead a team and build a lasting business. While Rocky is known for his four Super Bowl rings, his four pillars of success – leadership, talent, vision and buy-in – are what continue to guide him long after his playing days ended. 

Rocky’s story shows that true leadership doesn’t come from position or title – it's forged through adversity, built on trust and revealed when time gets tough. After being seriously wounded in Vietnam, doctors told him he’d likely never play football again. But he didn’t accept that narrative. With the support of the Steelers organization and his own internal drive, he worked his way back, not just to the field, but to a starring role on one of the most legendary teams in NFL history. 

Still, the comeback wasn’t easy. For several seasons, Rocky battled for a roster spot, often serving on special teams or sitting behind star players. After the 1973 season, frustrated, worn out and doubting his future, he quit. That’s when teammate and team captain Andy Russell reached out. He told Rocky, “If you quit, you’ve already made a decision for their coaching staff. Do you like them well enough to make decisions for them?” 

Andy continued, telling Rocky that his responsibility was to come back and give them every reason to either keep him or release him, but that he shouldn’t choose to cut himself. Rocky reminisced about the conversation, saying, “Maybe it was just the arm twisting I needed from an older brother I didn’t have. And I went back. And everything I had perceived did take place and I had to fight with every free agent and draft choice and rookie, once again, to make the team.”  

Despite the uphill battle, Rocky soon found himself carrying the ball more than anyone else. He earned a starting role, eventually moving from fullback to running back. Twelve years and four Super Bowl championships later, he retired from the NFL and began building a successful business in construction.  

The business of teamwork 

In both football and business, Rocky says the same leadership principles apply. Good leaders teach the fundamentals, support their people and create an environment where every team member feels valued and seen. 

Rocky’s story is a reminder that leadership starts with how you treat your people. Investing in training, caring about your employees’ families and giving them a clear goal to rally around can turn a group of individuals into a powerful, purpose-driven team. 

So, whether you’re a crew leader, company owner or just getting started in the industry, take Rocky’s advice: Don’t cut yourself. Show up. Invest in your people. And lead from the front.
