Look to the future while stepping back in time at the National Slate Association Conference. This conference will bring slate roofing professionals together on September 17-18, in Annapolis, Maryland, for two days of presentations, networking and firsthand exploration of the historic slate projects found all around the area, all while giving attendees a first-hand taste of Maryland’s heritage, architecture and hospitality.
Hosted at the beautiful Historic Inn of Annapolis, the conference begins with a welcome meetup September 16 at Harry Browne’s. The first full day opens with breakfast and an industry update from Tom Stortz, followed by sessions addressing legal developments, the economic value of historic preservation, roofing apprenticeships, slate underlayments and the challenges involved in restoring historic slate roofs.
After lunch, attendees will explore Annapolis through a walking segment featuring the Maryland State Capitol, State Circle, the historic post office and the Department of Legislative Services. The day concludes with an Annapolis waterfront cruise departing from the Piers at 1 Prince George St.
Programming continues September 18 with presentations focused on synthetic slate, Slate Roof Contractors Association (SRCA) training, United Kingdom slate techniques and current market conditions. Speakers will discuss demand, supply concerns, new products, lead times, pricing outlooks and repair details from the U.S. Naval Academy. National Slate Association committee reports and elections will close the morning program. In the afternoon, participants will meet at the U.S. Naval Academy Visitor Center before breaking into groups for a guided academy tour and group photo.
