EcoStar’s synthetic roofing products are now backed by an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), providing architects, contractors and property owners with verified information about the products’ environmental impact from production through disposal. An EPD is a standardized disclosure developed according to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards. Rather than assigning a rating or score, it documents how a product affects the environment throughout its life cycle, including raw material sourcing, manufacturing, transportation, installation, use and end-of-life.
EcoStar’s EPD was completed and certified through UL, an independent third-party environmental verification organization. The certification gives building professionals access to data they can use to evaluate products and compare material options based on documented environmental performance.
EcoStar manufactures synthetic slate, cedar shake, concrete flat tile and clay tile roofing materials made primarily from reclaimed plastics and rubber. The company’s roofing systems incorporate up to 80% recycled material. According to EcoStar, the EPD quantifies the products’ life cycle and demonstrates efforts to lower embodied carbon, reduce landfill pressure and decrease environmental impacts compared with a version made without recycled content.
The declaration also supports the product selection and specification process. Architects can use the information when considering materials for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) or WELL-certified projects. Contractors can provide documented sustainability information during submittals and product approvals, including for commercial or government-funded projects with environmental requirements.
For property owners, the EPD offers additional insight into the long-term environmental effects of a roofing investment. EcoStar’s composite slate and tile products also carry a Class 4 impact-resistance rating and a 50-year warranty, supporting the company’s focus on durability and reduced replacement waste.
With the declaration in place, EcoStar is pairing its synthetic roofing systems with independently verified environmental data intended to support responsible, informed material decisions.
