Outlining a company plan for the year might seem like a one-and-done task, but this is far from the truth. Danny Kerr, founder of Breakthrough Academy, told us all about this misconception companies have when drawing up a yearly company plan; it’s something to continuously return to if you want your company to grow and succeed.
Breakthrough Academy specializes in helping roofing contractors systemize theircompanies for growth. Danny told us how they aim to help contractors focus on leading and managing their company and seeing their work as more than just a job. A large part of this is planning for the year and future ahead.
Making a habit of planning for the future of your company is a great way to strategically plan. Danny recommends that company leadership set aside five hours a week to work on company goals. It might not seem like much, but it can make a big difference.

In an episode of Roofing Road Trips, he said, “One thing I would recommend this time of year is to make a list of all the things that you do in your role as the owner or manager of the company, and circle the stuff that's highest time consumption and lowest skill.” Doing this can help leaders see what they need to do so they can stay focused on their yearly plan.
Danny also encourages different styles of planning depending on the size of your company. For smaller companies he says, “It's okay to go experiment and fly by the seat of your pants for a little bit, and discover what you actually have, what your service actually is, where your niche really lies, all that kind of stuff.” It’s always better to have a plan that doesn’t work out so well than no plan at all.
