Why metal roofing delivers long-term performance

Why metal roofing delivers long-term performance

By Jesse Sanchez.

Metal roofing combines weather resistance, energy efficiency and durability to help building owners protect their investment.

Metal roofing is gaining attention among homeowners and commercial developers looking for durable building materials that can withstand severe weather while delivering long-term value. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG) highlights metal roofing’s combination of resilience, energy efficiency and sustainability as a practical alternative to traditional asphalt shingles.

Engineered to handle demanding conditions, metal roofs can resist hail, high winds and heavy snow. This performance is particularly valuable in storm-prone regions, where reducing the frequency of roof replacements can help property owners limit disruption and ongoing maintenance. Property owners who select metal roofing systems may also qualify for insurance discounts because of the material’s durability and resistance to severe weather.

Longevity is another important advantage. Metal roofs can last 40 to 70 years, compared with the typical 15- to 30-year service life of asphalt shingles. Their resistance to cracking, shrinking and erosion can mean fewer repairs over time. High-performance underlayments, including the Palisade® UDL family, can further support the durability of a metal roofing system.

Metal roofing can also improve building efficiency. By reflecting solar heat, these systems may reduce cooling costs by up to 25%, providing a potential benefit in warmer climates. Many metal roofing products contain recycled materials and are fully recyclable at the end of their service life. Certain systems may also qualify for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credits or tax incentives.

Although metal roofing generally carries a higher upfront cost, lower energy expenses, reduced maintenance needs and possible insurance discounts can contribute to its long-term return on investment. Its durability and sustainability may also support a home’s resale value.

As interest in resilient construction continues to grow, metal roofing, supported by high-performance products such as Palisade® UDL underlayments, offers building owners a system designed to provide lasting protection, efficiency and performance.
