In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Chris Huettig, Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (RCMA) president, to discuss the upcoming RCMA summer meeting as well as the comprehensive virtual training program RCMA offers for contractors interested in learning more about roof coatings.
The course was born from a desire to uplift the roofing industry and provide contractors with a correct understanding of the coating process and proper steps to of care. “This is important to RCMA because it's helping to elevate the roof coating industry... Coatings twenty years ago were very different. Many times, the instructions were, ‘Clean the roof and put two coats of this on.’ And you got different results,” Chris explained. “So really, we all know the best application is going to be when really the thought is put into it, and it's a thoughtful application, which starts with qualifying a roof, understanding where coatings can be applied and where they can't. This training program addresses that.”
By addressing misinformation and outdated practices with a new outlook on coatings, RCMA is making a difference in shining light on the industry. The training program is categorized into three main sections: evaluation and preparation of surfaces for coatings; roof coating technologies; and the application process. Each portion goes in depth over important information and practices participants should know or consider at each step of the process.
Because the program is done through RCMA, there are no ties to specific manufacturers, only education and knowledge. “We've all contributed and added our pieces as members, but it really comes from an unbiased foundation to just elevate the coatings industry,” Chris explained.
