For many roofing contractors, managing risk can feel like navigating a maze of jargon, fine print and unpredictable coverage gaps. A new partnership between Owens Corning and Roofer’s Choice Insurance is tackling that problem head-on — offering contractors a clearer path to protection.

While the roofing industry tends to emphasize craftsmanship, insurance is one of the less glamorous, yet most vital, parts of running a business. That’s exactly why Owens Corning has teamed up with Roofer’s Choice Insurance. Together, they aim to help contractors identify coverage gaps, avoid costly audit surprises and navigate a volatile insurance market.

“One of the most important parts of the business, that if left untaken care of and not managed and brought in the wrong direction, can have a big effect on the business,” said Jon Gardner, who leads strategic partnerships and learning initiatives at Owens Corning.

This Roofing Road Trips® podcast zooms in on how Roofer’s Choice goes beyond typical insurance services. According to Brett Scott, a partner at Roofer’s Choice, their model is built around active consultation — not just selling policies.

“We also serve as an extended arm of their company,” Brett said. “We're just not a, ‘Hey, here's your insurance policy. We'll see you next year,’ kind of company.”

This hands-on approach includes policy audits, training and guidance on subcontractor risk and state-specific regulations. The company currently insures more than 600 roofing contractors across all 50 states.

And with market conditions tightening, Brett expressed the urgency: “We’re in what we refer to as an extremely hard market,” he explained. “There’s lack of underwriting availability, meaning certain carriers are pulling out.”

The stakes are high. In states like Florida and Colorado, policy exclusions and changes in liability laws are causing ripple effects. Brett stated, “One in every two roofing contractors is going to have a claim.”

With volatility on the rise, both Jon and Brett urge contractors to take advantage of free policy audits offered through Owens Corning’s contractor network. Joe warned, “What you don't know could put you at substantial risk.”
